Abstract:

Objective To examine possible correlation between thyroid hormone levels and clinical stage in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC),and to provide guidelines for using levels to evaluate patients and design treatments. Methods Serum levels of thyroid hormones were compared for 80 patients with NSCLC, 40 patients with other types of malignant tumor, and 30 healthy controls. Results Levels of TT3 and FT3 decreased significantly with increasing NSCLC stage(P<0.05), while levels of TT4,FT4 and TSH did not vary significantly with stage (P>0.05). Levels of FT4, FT3 and TT3 were significantly lower in the NSCLC group than in the other two groups (P<0.05), while levels of TT4 and TSH were similar across all three groups (P>0.05). Levels of TT3 were significantly higher in the control group than in the other two groups(P<0.05). Conclusion NSCLC is associated with significant changes in thyroid hormone levels, which correlate with clinical stage. Monitoring these hormone levels in patients may help guide their evaluation and treatment.
