Differential diagnosis of maxillofacial fibrous dysplasia of bone and ossifying fibroma

Abstract: Objective To study the differentiations between maxillofacial fibrous dysplasia of bone(FD) and ossifying fibroma(OF).Methods Comparative analysis on 44 cases of FD and 66 cases of OF were carried out in the clinical,radiological and pathological manifestations.Results No significant difference was observed in the sex between FD and OF groups.The ages of initiative development and initiative cure,dental lesions,pain on the jaw and face,projection of buccal and/or glossal side of alveolar process in the OF group were higher than that in the FD group,respectively(P<0.05).Mandibulae was more often affected than maxillae in OF group,but there was no significant difference in FD group.The radiological manifestations in OF group presented radiolucent appearance and mixed appearance,while presented ground-glass appearance and mixed appearance in FD group.Conclusion Combinative analysis on clinical,radiological and pathological manifestation is necessary for deferential diagnosis on FD and OF.
